Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice are simply a group of people that are knowledgeable and interested in the same thing that help one another on problems that arise. For example, in class, we used the example of WordPress. Here is the components we came up with that form this COP. Oddly enough, people often participate in Communities of Practice frequently without knowing it. A club or a sports team are perfect examples of these. You voluntarily choose to join the club or team. You work to accomplish goals with others that have similar ones; helping each other along the way with any problems or questions that arise. They collaborate to form a community that is formed and succeeds due to communication. Some argue that anything lower than collegiate sports is not a COP due to the team they join not necessarily being chosen because there are no other options. I disagree with this because they are voluntarily playing the sport; knowing the team they are joining. What do you think? Are lower level sports an example of a COP or not?

  1. I am inclined to agree with you Corey. The way that I view sports teams are that players from little league to pro ball all choose the team that they want and the sport. The fact that they have the ability to join a group based on who they are and how they operate in a certain sport is plenty of proof for me. As a former MMA, Football, and Soccer player, the most important part was to find the right team for me in that sport.
